Raum – Flächen,
"Magic of Paper" was the title of an exhibition Samuelis Baumgarte Gallery presented in 2012. This extensive show of Lore Bert showed more than 40 works from the last six years of the artist born in 1936 in Giessen. Her art, appreciated in numerous international exhibitions, unites aspects of the draught art with those of the concrete art and is also close to light art by the use of neon tubes.
The focus of "Magic of Paper" pointed to the moticiv as well as formatively varied paper works. At first sight her large-sized picture objects of Japan paper folded to small blossoms with integrated gold leaf (like „Golden ornament“, 2011, 160 x 160 cm) fascinate the viewer, because they cross the border of the two-dimensionality in relation to their surface. As the artist is inspired by universal graphics, linguistic and abstract signs, ornaments and symbols the pictures act – like the high-quality Japanese paper which they are made of – as a bearer of the culture of their origin. Even the large-sized picture objects radiate lightness and fragility.
Also in the three-dimensional area Bert objects testify from an unobstrusive and at the same time mysterious aesthetic. The compact collages on wax paper (like "Komposition", 2007, 30 x 21cm) and watercolors (from the series "Komposition ohne Titel", 2012, 20 x 20 cm) form a contrast which fascinates the viewer on account of a puristic use of forms and surface, as they are close thematically and aesthetically.
