Fritz Winter

  • Pflanzlich Ornamental
  • 1953, Öl auf Leinwand, 50,5 x 73 cm

Born 1905 in Altenbögge (Westphalia) the painter (died in 1976) by his multilayered work and his extensive creativity applies as one of the most important German artist of international modern art. As a student of Paul Klee, Wassily Kandinsky, Josef Albers and Oskar Schlemmer, Winter reached an increasing reliance in his artistic work. He distanced himself during his studies from 1927 to 1930 at the Bauhaus in Dessau from its principles and criticized the subordinate position occupied by the painting at the Bauhaus.

Inspired by Kandinsky and Klee and the close friendship with Naum Gabo and Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Winters works of the 1930s show a free examination, detached from the Bauhaus-ideals, with pictorial elements, using a variety of shapes experimentally. In 1949 he co-founded the Munich artist group ZEN 49, which saw itself in the tradition of the Blauer Reiter (“Blue Rider”) and manifested itself in a pictorial representation of a contrasting image to the spiritual world. During the Second World War Winter came to halfway black and organic shapes, mostly positioned in front of a light background with latticework. This certain abstract painting made him one of the key pioneers of abstraction in Europe.
