Biography

Ruth Baumgarte occupied a pictorial world of youthful force, with strong, fiery, tropical colours and convincing forms. Born in Coburg (Bavaria, Germany) in 1923, she grew up in Berlin and had her first artistic training while still a schoolgirl. She deceased in Bielefeld in 2013.

In 1938 she attended the Kunstschule des Westens (Art School of the West) in Berlin and, from 1940 -1944, she studied Graphic Arts and Painting at the Berlin Hochschule der Bildenden Künste (Academy of the Figurative Arts). During her studies she was a regular contributor to the "Kaskeline-Zeichentrickfilm-Atelier" (Kaskeline Animation Film Studio; still existant) in Berlin. During (and as a consequence of) the war, she relocated and attended the Meisteratelier (Masters’ Studio) at the Staatliche Industrie- und Kunstgewerbeschule (State College of Industry and Applied Arts) in Sonneberg (Thuringia). Upon her return to Berlin, she worked as a press draughtswoman (or graphic artist) for the city’s first German / Russian daily and as an art teacher at a grammar school as well.

Her subject matter were figures and landscape, her medium light represented by colour. These are represented in a manner that pushes the work’s emotional qualities to the foreground. Her palette was influenced by exotic motifs (often from Africa), but it is less a firework of colour than, more often than not, a kind of quiet, even silence, which presents itself as the real subject of these images. A roaring silence maybe, but that goes well with the spiritual, sensual, and meditative character of many of her paintings.

Still, there remains a kind of narrative involved. The beholder learns about people, their surroundings, their ways of life and what makes them who they are. Ruth Baumgarte aimed to achieve a characterisation of figures and objects by way of a determined outline, which is, simultaneously, an expression of emotional experience.
